Tips to Improve Mobility and Accessibility on Vacation

September 30, 2017 By Chris Smythe

You finally have your home exactly how you want it. It’s easy for you to move independently and safely around your home. You can move easily between floors, take a bath, even cook without worrying about mobility issues.

With a little effort, going on vacation and visiting others’ homes can provide you with an equally safe experience. To improve your mobility on vacation, follow these tips:

Rent an Electric Scooter

If you don’t have a scooter that is easy to transport, you can rent an electric scooter to take with you or pick it up at your vacation destination. Scooters can improve your safety in homes that present falling hazards. It can also help you keep up with your family whether they are strolling through a museum or headed to the beach. You can even rent scooters designed for sand to help make your vacation more enjoyable.

Scout Ahead for Accessible Locations

In addition to finding a place to stay that is wheelchair accessible, pick out museums, restaurants and attractions to visit that have ramps and elevators. You may need to call some places in advance to find out if they are wheelchair-friendly. By scouting ahead, you avoid disappointment during your vacation.

Pick an Accessible Place

Smaller towns may not have the mobility equipment you need to enjoy your vacation. However, cities or larger towns may have sidewalks and building codes that help you easily access many places. Try to research what places may be most friendly to your needs.

Check Airline Policies

If you are flying, check airline policies about wheelchairs before booking your tickets. You’ll also want to leave plenty of time to get through security and pre-board the plane before other passengers. Most airlines will check your wheelchair at no extra cost. You will likely be able to use your wheelchair until you board the plane. Your wheelchair will be brought to you when the plane lands.

Rent Equipment for Your Vacation Home

If you are renting a vacation home, you can also rent mobility equipment to ensure it fits your needs during your stay. You may be able to rent equipment such as:

  • Wheelchair ramps
  • Portable showers
  • Stair Chair Lifts

Simply find a local mobility equipment supplier to find out how you can make your vacation home a truly relaxing and enjoyable place.
