Transportation Options for Adults with Disabilities in Hampton Roads

March 5, 2018 By Chris Smythe

Transportation shouldn’t be an obstacle to independence for people who use wheelchairs or experience disabilities. Improve your ability to travel whenever and wherever you like throughout Hampton Roads by using one of these services below.

Community Assistance and Resources for Seniors

On the Peninsula, Catholic Charities of Eastern Virginia sponsors a free transportation program for seniors. You can schedule free rides with trained volunteers to medical appointments or other errands. Though volunteers may not be open at every time, this may be a good option for seniors with limited budgets.

Paratransit through Hampton Roads Transit

Through a federally mandated program, Hampton Roads Transit offers Paratransit transportation services for people who use wheelchairs. For $3.50 per ride one-way, you can schedule a trip in a bus or van to destinations in all seven cities of Hampton Roads. These vehicles can accommodate wheelchairs.

I-Ride Transit

I-Ride Transit, through Senior Services of Southeastern Virginia, offers inexpensive medical and fixed-route transportation services for people over age 60 and people with disabilities in Hampton Roads. In some areas, they also offer transportation to Wal-Mart and wellness centers. Please contact I-Ride Transit to learn more about their services available in your area.

Peninsula Agency on Aging

Through Peninsula Agency on Aging (PAA) transportation services, people over age 60 can use wheelchair vans and other vehicles to medical appointments, adult day care centers and PAA sponsored activities. You can use these services if you cannot afford private transportation, even if you don’t qualify for Medicaid or other medical transportation.

Vehicle Modifications

Depending on your needs, you may be able to modify your current vehicle so that you can easily and safely drive. Wheelchair docks, handgrips, left-foot gas pedals and other products can improve the usability of your vehicle. You can also explore purchasing disability friendly vans or SUVs.

For help modifying your vehicle, please contact Hampton Roads Mobility.
